The Piedmont Slam was fantastic! So it's not exactly a music concert, but it's a performance and it still counts! The poets were amazing, and they performed to a very enthused audience that would boo the judges if they gave a score lower than a 9.0! It's great how poetry performances are gaining in popularity and are starting to be events that attract very large and diverse crowds in this city. Please watch all the videos, as the performers are very diverse themselves with their poetry! After the cut!
"Well, joy is like a kind of a bland word to apply to music. It's more catharsis. If there would be no music a lot of souls would be sick. Music is actually the essence of the world." Eugene Hutz

Halloween Party/Bands/Blood Wrestling GORE GORE GORE!

That is the title of what was Royer's crazy Halloween bash. There were many bands playing, and many dressed up people to mingle with. I was not there for the entire thing, but I watched and really enjoyed the Hot House Hefftones and Quantum Foundry. The Heftones played really fun gypsy cantina music, it was great! I did not know that anything like that existed in this city. This excites me greatly.
Apparently after my friends and I left the blood wrestling began and people got naked! Hah!

Family Force 5
Well I went to the FF5 show at Amos's. It was fun, but they didn't have as awesome of a stage presence as last time. Last time I saw them they had the super-dyed hair, crazy stage lights, fun stage props and tight shirts, and I was quite possibly the oldest person there dancing other than the parents there! Regardless.. it was a fun show, however I do not remember too much of it because M. and I got pretty drunk.

Tiesto
Well, since I waited too long to buy tickets... I once again miss out on seeing Tiesto at The Forum. Hopefully he will be back in a year or two, again, and I can properly enjoy the show: in a tight mini-dress, and hyped on redbull!

Scapegoat/Wretched/Sugarglyder/Lost/Letlive 9.12.09
All of these guys played awesome sets!!
Letlive was in town and played an awesome set that unfortunately I didn't get very good videos of (sadface) because I was bouncing around too much. Jason kept mentioning that he was half-black and relating it to his penis. I think audience got the message! It appears Jason and I are musical soulmates as we are into the same industrial rock bands, hah!
Lost was great, even though no one could understand the Japanese lyrics, they still danced to the music! I tried to remember what I learned in Japanese class but I only got as far as asking their names and introducing myself.
I think it was my first time seeing Wretched - they were pretty badass and of course Scapegoat was phenomenal! Justin D. was very epic with his fan-blown hair.

I don't know how to do a post cut, so here is my trigger.rec-happy collection of videos from the 12th!

Peelander Z WORLD HEALTH TOUR 9.16.09
Peelander Z brought down the house! I was one of the first shows on their World Health tour, and there were a few familiar faces in the crowd (that's you Mo, and guy with the cat mask!) but mostly people that didn't know what sort of Japanese crazyness was about to take place! There were quite a few 'Mike' in the crowd and they all got called out by Peelander Yellow! He was reminiscing very sadly about 'too many Mike' stealing his girlfriend this time. The big finale included Peelander bowling, and a re-set-up of the equipment in the middle of the venue, where PZ made everyone run in a circle around them! Imagine here, a place full of drunk people, stumbling over each other in a frenzied way, in a circle, fueled by Japanese rock! Needless to say I hope I fulfilled my duty as bouncy fangirl. I think next time I will bring my giant canvas fan-painting I made and have them sign it!DeLeon with Os Mutantes

Metal Brutality Murder Show @ Tremont
Last night I went exploring the metal scene in the QC and I experienced a lot of very brutal metal. The lineup was A Vision Grotesque, Diavolo, Zeus, and Columns and they played a good mix of some thrashy death metal and grindcore. I never got too much into the death metal scene so I won't try to sound like I know what I'm talking about; but it was very fun! One thing's for sure these guys love getting rowdy and head banging and screaming at their audience.. occasionally throwing things - including themselves!
Deafness from not using/forgetting earplugs is probably in my future.

!OUT NOW! Ready for the Weekend !OUT NOW!

Ready for the Weekend is the second album by Calvin Harris!! It feels like I've been waiting for this since he created disco. The new album feels ever more personal, or at the very least very nostalgic, unlike his first album - with tracks like "Not Alone" and "Flashback".
It's out TOMORROW! Check it out at iTunes
Until I can get the new album, I am celebrating by making my very own fly eyes photo via the Calviniser!

Gogol Bordello in Va. @ The Norva with DeLeon [July 31 09]

What a fantastic night! I survived it with a broken toe from people dancing on and around my feet, and danced my ass off in an alcoholic stupor trying to keep up with the continuous energy of GB and their gogo girls. It was pretty much non-stop energy, they did not play any of their slower ballads. Apparently I took approximately 20 minutes of video footage which is strange because I don't remember much of anything other than dancing. The Norva was a really awesome venue, not too big but not that small either; and it wasn't TRASHY! Outside patio area for smokers (beware, drinks at the outside bar are ~1$ more expensive than from the indoor bar!)
DeLeon - a Spanish indie rock band out of Brooklyn was a perfect opener for GB. I had heard them previously, but their recordings do not do their live performances any justice. Amy Crawford's voice was beautiful and the trumpet added that western feel reminiscent of the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. The performance was a wonderful concoction of beautiful spaniard harmonies and indie rock.
From what I have searched, there is extremely limited footage of DeLeon (with only one music video available, La Serena:youtube); they are hard to find as they share their name with other artists. So I offer my live recording and photos!

NIN/JA @ the Verizon Wireless Ampitheatre in Charlotte [7-18-09]
Well I didn't really stick around for much of Jane's Addiction so I don't have much to say about them, other than most - ok all of the people I know that went to this show were disappointed that NIN did not headline! Since this is supposed to be NIN's farewell tour, my friends and I had assumed of course NIN is headlining much to our surprise. An hour and a half of of NIN simply did not suffice, and drinking was pretty impossible and ridiculous at 10$ for a 24oz beer.
Compared to the first time I saw NIN, which was on their With Teeth tour with Bauhaus in 2006, this show was not quite as epic. Possibly because last time I saw Bauhaus, had center booth tickets, and there was an apocalyptic thunderstorm that raged through the area causing the band to briefly stop - until Trent Reznor said 'Fuck it' and kept playing through the storm.
Trent Reznor's Farewell note:
Towards the beginning of my career in Nine Inch Nails, our biggest break came in the form of an invitation to perform a series of shows with Jane's Addiction. These performances essentially created and defined the term "alternative" rock in the US, created an ongoing festival franchise that is still thriving (Lollapalooza), set the stage for Nirvana to shift popular taste a few months later, and were really fucking FUN to play and attend - truly the best times I've had. The shows were epic. So epic, they propelled NIN to the "next level" (whatever that means), but caused Jane's to implode. The band broke up at the end of that tour.Fast forward to the present. Corporate rock STILL sucks. A friend tells me they saw the original Jane's lineup play a tiny show in LA that was unbelievable. I break out my Jane's records and am amazed by how vital they sound. These guys were the real deal and in this current climate mostly dominated by poseurs and pussies it was refreshing to hear something that sounded dangerous, volatile, beautiful and SINCERE.Emails were sent, phone calls were made, dinner was arranged, ideas were discussed and the next thing I know we're in the studio experimenting. We laugh, we get to know each other, we cry, we yell, we almost quit, we record LOTS of guitar solos, we discuss, we actually begin to all communicate, we yell some more, we become FRIENDS, we laugh again and we do some great things. I get to see first hand why they broke up all those years ago but I also get the chance to see four distinct personalities that become an INCREDIBLE band when they're in the same room.In NIN world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases. I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while. Last year's "Lights in the Sky" tour was something I'm quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production. It was also quite difficult to pull off technically and physically night after night and left us all a bit dazed. After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year. The approach to these shows is quite different from last year - much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted. Fun for us and a different way for you to see us and wave goodbye. I reached out to Jane's to see if they'd want to join us across the US and we all felt it could be a great thing. Will it work? Will it resonate in the marketplace? Who knows. Is there big record label marketing dollars to convince you to attend? Nope.Does it feel right to us and does it seem like it will be fun for us and you? Yes it does.Look for tour dates soon and I hope to see you out there.

Gothic Cruise Offers New Way For Mascara To Melt: On The Ocean
If only I had 1 thousand dollars... this would make my heart flutter until the dust falls off the cobwebs that have grown in there. You mean I can finally wear my PVC bikini and lay out in the sun and tan while pretending to hate the sunlight? Score. For that much cash the alcohol better be covered, because sober goths just aren't as.. dancey.
I imagine the goth cruise to be like Purgatory or any other such fetish club event, with girls bound by ropes swinging from the ceiling, where "you can submit yourself to a paddling, or a whipping, or something more daring and unique altogether. *"
Who doesn't like the sound of that?
