Video Feature / Jessie J does it like a dude

Jessie J is my new brit hero (besides Lily Allen.) Her song “Do It Like a Dude” could quite possibly be the best lesbian anthem ever and it was just released as her first international single November 21st! I've been listening to it on loop all day, until my hard drive fried. Incidents not connected, really. I found this video in the YouTube suggestion list.

Besides the major penis envy theme, she just has this air of badass that emanates from her attitude.
I have not found any official sources saying if she's actually a lesbian or not, but you don't have to be a lesbian or a feminist in order to have the occasional penis envy.

I am here to say, I have often suffered from penis envy. A lot of my youth was spent obsessing about androgynous Japanese stars, and playing dress-up. Ok, I still do that, but some things are hard to grow out of. I would often watch male celebrities who can get away by moving/looking/dancing/etc awkwardly and crazily and still maintain an aura of masculinity. I often feel that as a girl, trying to some of those things doesn't really have the same effect.

That's why when I encounter song like this, the lyrics give me a glimmer of hope. Because it makes me feel that I, too, can “ Do it like a dude / Grab my crotch, wear my hat low like you.”

Video Feature: Skinny Puppy

I've been on a Skinny Puppy kick lately and I decided to enlighten M about what I grew up on, but I kind of took a backwards approach to it - introducing him first to their Pro-Test video from their album The Greater Wrong of the Right. By the time this album was released after a 8 year hiatus, I consider it to be just Ohgr and cEvin Key releasing stuff under the Skinny Puppy name, without any of the original feel (like I'm sure every other fan would say). So, probably not the best introduction to the band, but ANYWAY what I discovered while watching this just now made me see this video in a whole new way.

I have never noticed how near the end of their video Pro-Test (where a group of goths have a breakdancing battle with some street kids) that 2 black guys in cammo and combat boots come OUT OF NOWHERE, do some crazy crump breakdancing, and then beat up one of the street kids. With breakdancing moves. I mean, the cammo, the combat boots, beating people up, angstily breakdancing and stuff - my first impression was: AW SHIT the rivetheads showed up!

Skinny Puppy and Dark City mashup!

I have just discovered the YouTube Doubler and have created an awesome mash-up of the fight scene in the movie Dark City along with Skinny Puppy's "Morpheus Laughing."

I've always had mixed feelings about Dark City. I'm a sucker for cyberpunk themes but I always thought the acting was awkward. This is the same reason I had trouble accepting Bladerunner. Regardless, the fight scene in Dark City is visually epic, full of mind-powers and destruction of buildings. The very first time I saw the movie, years and years ago, before the takeover of the internets and YouTube, I actually put my tv set on mute and turned this track on. And I thought I was being original for creating what is now popularly known as a mashup.
I think fans would like it.
Let the epicness ensue after the jump!

Video Feature: Obsessed With You by The Orion Experience

On the flip side, "Obsessed With You" is a fun stalker song. Now I know what you're thinking: fun stalker? That's an oxymoron! But that's not true. Some friends and I have had a couple of stalkers around our college campus, which we dubbed "creepy-stalker-kid" and "wolf-boy," but this is waaaaay different! This is like having groupies even if you're not in a band. It's like having fans who love your imperfections and show it through their own imperfect ways!

I asked my friend G How who actually enlightened me about the existence of this video what he thinks of it.  He simply put it, "Um, IT'S AWESOME!?" Then I asked, well, what about the creepy stalker aspect of it? "Well, they're cute, and you grow to love them by the end."
And yes, I couldn't have put it better myself. I would not mind having some stalkers of this caliber. Cute stalkers are not creepy.

Voltaire at DragonCon!

I got to meet Voltaire! You can probably tell from the photo how much excitement was bursting from my face. I dragged my friends back out at 1:30am in order to go see him play, and I'm glad to say that they really enjoyed his performance and witty banter. Also, he humped a balloon into oblivion. This was his 11th year at DragonCon, and it was by far his hairiest. He claimed that it was because he let himself go a little since he got married, but I think the hairy look works for him very well.
He performed a rendition of Vampire Ball completely redone to include Twilight details, which was hilarious. See video!

I missed seeing The Cruxshadows, but I got to chat with Rogue for a while and he assures me that the Goth Cruises are super-awesome because it is open-bar and open-menu all the time! "You can just order 7 lobster trays one after the other and just eat all of it if you want to!" - Rogue.
His hair is even pointier when you're right in front of him.

Meeting them reminded me just how much fun it is to just be goth! Because sometimes, you forget just a little when you don't know other goths.

League of Legends Champions DragonCon 2010

Here are my friends and I pictured as champions from the mmo League of Legends! It is a game where you play 5v5 or 3v3 on a map against other players and get to own each other based on how fast you level up to 18, how many minions and opposing champions you kill, and what items you buy. We are (from the left) Garen, Ryze, Ezreal, and Singed. Dragoncon was a blast, and we loved dressing up; it was very exciting when people recognized our characters.

The user Arafel said the following on the LoL forums: "They all had pretty good costumes, except that a girl was Ryze and a guy was Ezreal." That gave us many lols because Ryze is actually a bald guy, and Ezreal is a really anime character that looks like a tween.

There were so many events to check out and we checked out only a fraction of them. I went to a Star Trek panel which included Ryker, La Forge, Troi, and Data. They were answering the crowd's questions but ended up ragging on each other mostly. They had a Trekkie costume contest, broke the record for most Trekkies in one place. We also checked out an after dark sexy costume contest which got pretty rowdy, and a WOW gameshow panel with special guest Oxhorn. Later that night there was a WOW danceparty social, but the ratio of girls to guys was terrible, and while there were people actually dancing it was very awkward for everyone involved. Or maybe just us.

There were numerous concerts and dj's. I got to meet Voltaire and Rogue of The Cruxshadows!

My favorite part of the trip was definitely being recognized, and also being asked to pose for photos. I'm a little concerned about my peeling paint, and hope some terrible photos don't surface where my paint just looks terrible. As one guy said "We'll fix it in post op." Yes, I really hope you do.

Some comments we received:
"You just made my life!"
"Singed, keep flinging."

T-1 days until DRAGONCON!

This weekend I will be invading Atlanta with my friends for my first ever Dragoncon event! I am beyond excited because my friends and I have been working on our costumes, and they are looking pretty damn good for super cheap costumes.

We have a group of 4 people and we are all dressing up as League of Legends characters! Out characters come complete with some jokes, taunts, and even a dance. We have Garen, Ezreal, Singed, and RYZE! My character is Ryze, who is totally OP in the first season trailer of LoL, and who is a badass rougue mage. Oh, and since Ryze is a guy and I'm not going to shave my head, or grow a beard and a penis, I'm going to be sexy girl Ryze! So, basically all that awesomeness + bewbs

So stoked.

ANIMALIA Tour || Android Lust + MKIO

Android Lust
Probably my favorite thing about the Animalia tour, besides getting to see Mankind is Obsolete and Android Lust perform, was meeting my friend Corey! I have known Corey for forever on the internets, and it was very exciting to finally meet him! The size of the crowd was lackluster, being a Tuesday night, but the crowd got a bit better as the night progressed and we still rocked out. It was actually the first time I have ever been on "the list" (not that it made a difference since I pre-ordered my tickets.) The other person on the list? David Bowie.

I basically know about these bands because Corey twitters about them all the time, so I got curious. I am very excited about the video I took of Android Lust (which you can view below) because I was able to get some very nice angles. It didn't even need any post editing! You can listen to all of their awesome music for FREE streaming on their websites! So go ahead and clicky for a listen:

Video Feature: Techno Jeep

This video is hands down the best industrial track that I have heard in years. YEARS people! Nothing is more industrial than making music from banging on metal, scratching metal, burning metal, slamming metal against metal, throwing things at metal, thrashing metal, you get the idea. Sampling metal noises of any kind is pretty damn industrial.  Therefore, this video = full of industrial win, because this was done in ONE TAKE putting all those microKorgs to shame. These guys are so full of rivethead potential that I think it blasphemy that it's titled "Techno Jeep"

CD's in My Car: Family Force 5

Family Force 5's album Business up Front / Party in the Back

One of my favorite cd's to jam out in my car actually doesn't contain any swearing or debaucherous language! It's full of wholesome lyrics?! Whaaaaaaat? Well, they are a Christian rap rock band, and their target audience is from what I've experienced ~14 year olds, but I still derive some strange sort of enjoyment from attending their shows and dancing like a crazy person and being 1 out of 2 people taking bar breaks (the other being my boyfriend, and the kid's parents don't count!)

With stage names like Chapstique, Crouton, and Soul Glow Activatur, these guys are more like action figures on stage rather than people. Besides promoting incorrect spelling, they promote having a good time and dancing.

The lyrics don't get any more R rated than "Dance next to me" and "Start the party now come on put yo hands up" and "Watch what you say around my momma, she raised me in the durrty south." Their straightedge scenester appeal for some reason works, and there's just something about their music that is awesome.

Rammstein Live Aus Berlin

I recently bough a copy of the DVD Rammstein Live Aus Berlin and it is by far one of the most epic things I own. I put it on while unpacking boxes at my new house and nothing got accomplished except for a wide-eyed drool fest. Later I made my roommates watch it on the bigscreen and it was just as beautiful. There are a lot of things that can make me giggle like a little school girl, but there's nothing quite like Rammstein's pyrotechnics and stage presence.

The band interview on the DVD is very nice, giving the fans more insight into their lives, like how after all these years Flea hasn't really confirmed that he is officially in the band, and their music formula which is "repetitive and minimalist."

Many people think of German as being a harsh language, but it's really about perspective. German can be powerful but in regular speech it flows so nicely it's almost flamboyant. Rammstein's music formula is "Soft riff soft lyrics; hard riff hard lyrics" so it makes sense that in their rock-infused music they sound harsh. But when you watch the interview where they are having a regular conversation German sounds completely opposite.

You can probably watch the entire concert through youtube but it would be an insult. Plus you would miss out on the German subtitles which make it infinitely easier to sing along to.

On Rivetheads.

Written by sexyDEATHparty circa 2006 (I was in high-skewl!)
when I looked like this and fancied myself a rivethead!

The Industrial counterculture, better known amongst its members as Rivethead subculture is like the bastard child of the Punk and Gothic subcultures. Usually, some rivetheads may start out as mopey, depressed, and fragile Goths with white painted faces, but when one decides that the Gothic subculture does not expresses the angry, rebellious, and aggressive feelings a person may have developed, the transition to elite rivethead begins.

Many rivetheads cringe at being called Goths, and there is often a very fine line between being a rivethead or a Goth that unless you are part of the scene and are in the know of who is what, an outsider would not be able to distinguish between the two. There are also some similarities between the two and rave subculture, these are your cyber-Goths. There are similarities between rivetheads and the latter, such as the visual aesthetics, and heavy emphasis on electronic music. However, cyber is to rivethead what post cyberpunk is to cyberpunk.

“In cyberpunk, the alienating effect of new technology is emphasized, whereas in post cyberpunk, "technology is society." – Cyberpunk Article

Industrial leans towards the negative view of technology, while accepting the aesthetic results of technological dystopia, and cyber wholly embraces technology as positive. While rivetheads do also thrive on the technological advances of our age, they are fully aware of its foulness and that it might one day produce evil machines that will overthrow mankind, and they relish it believing they would be the ones to survive an apocalyptic battle of machines.

Rivetheads quite often express express their views in a post apocalyptic style. Considering this view they have on life it would not be surprising to find an assortment of gas masks complete with filters in their closets, self dug out bomb shelters in their backyards, or even that they visit the shooting range weekly to improve their accuracy in hopes that once the Apocalypse arrives the would be well prepared for a survival of the fittest.

The technology factor is not the only thing rivethead subculture is centered around. Like all countercultures, it is based around a music scene. Their scene is industrial music and some electronic music, or EBM. The music they fixate on revolves around an obsession with banging on things and playing with keyboards and computers. A large misconception by other cultures is that all Rivetheads worship Trent Reznor. Sure, he might be a God among many music savants for all of his innovations in music, but most Rivetheads have a love-hate relationship with him. Usually, they prefer the harsh industrial sounds of German-based bands such as Rammstein, KMFDM, Hanzel und Gretyl or Einstürzende Neubauten.

Rammstein would be a perfect example of remotely mainstreaming the subculture with their militant-style clothes, goggles and pyromaniac shows. However not everyone who listens to them is necessarily a rivethead. Many Japanese artists also produce music, or rather, noise or static attracts many rivetheads such as the experimental noises of Merzbow and Massona. Many rivetheads like to justify their hardcoreness by attending many morbid and underground concerts where the dance style consists of stomping around in big boots and kicking and punching the air with evil grimaces on their faces. There has been an explosion of such concerts in the past year, such as the tours by KMFDM, Bile, Ministry, and the reassemblage of Skinny Puppy and many such bands. While these are the biggest names in music controlling the industrial scene, usually the more underground and obscure a band that a rivethead listens to is, the more elite points the rivethead gets.

Fashion is a very large part of the counterculture, just like any other. Rivethead fashion is usually a blend of cyber-Goth and crust-punk. Usually, you will see a rivethead sporting shiny, tight, and black PVC clothes, lots of spikes, pieces of circuitry randomly sticking out of places from their bodies in attempts to look like cyborgs. The goal is to look as futuristic and post apocalyptic as possible. Accessories are spikes, lots of shiny things, big chunky combat boots and goggles to shield their weak human eyes from the radiation of atomic bombs. But the biggest accessory of all is the synthetic hair. Fake neon-colored hair braided like dreads and attached to the scalp. Usually the bigger the better, but some take it to a ridiculous degree to where they have excessive mountains of synthetic falls atop their head weighing it down so much they will most likely experience back problems later in their lives. The difference between Rivetheads and Goths is that Goths tend to wear flowing black clothes, emphasizing a Victorian look, and sad makeup. But sometimes the fashions merge a little too close for comfort and the only distinguishable thing would be one’s attitude. A trend among these two close and intertwining subcultures are shaved eyebrows. They usually use eyeliner to draw on eyebrows for more emphasis.

Rivetheads are quick to respond with violence, mean words or a sub cultural pop quiz of names and bands when opposed by someone of another subculture or someone they suspect to be a fake infiltrating their scene. The largest concentration of rivetheads is in Toronto, Seattle and New York City. Many are also attracted to Germany because of the industrious past of the country and the numerous musical influences that are German-based. Rivetheads would be most happy to work in factories or hardware stores such as Home Depot where they are constantly surrounded with shiny tools to catch their attention.

Powerman 5000 rant

Powerman 5000. Villainous, destruction-fueled industrial-undertone rock.

If there was one thing good about my first boyfriend was that he introduced me to PM5K.
Since then frontman Spider One taught me about good and evil, harvesting my teenage angst, post-apocalyptic fashion, and the 1-man stompy dance. I pretty much aspired to achieve a stompy to sexy balance ratio as shown in their video "Bombshell" because well.. I really wanted to be an androgynously sexy cyborg.

And they taught me that on their album "Tonight The Stars Revolt" which was probably THEIR BEST ALBUM because of the content, and the kick-ass music videos which it produced.
After that was "Transform" in which they all started wearing denim and shooting cheap videos in an empty studio and singing about freedom, and being a rich American rockstar. I mean really? I think that suits Nickelback better, because they suck. You start your own record label and this is what you do? Fail. Transform was on a totally different spectrum than "Tonight The Stars Revolt." It's hopeful and inspiring and lacks evil substance AND THAT'S JUST WRONG!

They dropped their apocalyptic cyber stillsuits for DENIM?! I have no words to describe the atrociousness. What if hot cyborg-chick came back to destroy you and you were rocking out in denim in an empty studio? That is not a very honorable way to go. But holding an angsty concert in the apocalyptic desert wearing suffocating stillsuits while stomping around.. it's ever more redeeming. And epic.

Thankfully, they got their villain helmets back on, dropped the denim look, and started making hard music again and singing about the really important things like how awesome it is to be a villain, and even incorporated the traditional machinistic death arm of men-turning-into-machines-having-street-duels-to-the-death characteristic of cyberpunk Japanese movies into their videos. Much better.

Trans Continental Hustle!

New Gogol Bordello music streaming on their MySpace page!! Their new album Trans Continental Hustle comes out EVERYWHERE April 27th!

If you're not a fan, you will listen until you like it. They finally recorded Pala Tute in studio, and it's a lot different than other versions on youtube where Eugene Hutz sings it accompanied only by an acoustic guitar which he plays. The studio version is packed with more energy, rather than the sorrowful acoustic version. I still prefer the acoustic one, simply because it seems to have more emotion, and it's not over-produced to the point where a lot of beautiful musical aspects are lost.

Party.

"Mc Frontalot ain't nothing to fuck with!"

Let me first explain some things. I first discovered MC Frontalot in the days of my youth in early highschool, back when I was deep in the grasp of industrial music. I first heard MC Frontalot on a track with KOMPRESSOR, rapping about being crushed by industrial might on a track simply titled Rappers We Crush. Well, I soon figured out that nerdcore was awesome, and I started questioning if rappers deserved to be crushed by industrial might. Of course, not all rappers, and definitely not the guys that performed the other night.

On the lineup opening up for MC Frontalot was Kbaz, Thought Criminals, and Quantum Foundry. These guys put on a really lively show and everyone really got into it.

うずひ (UZUHI), Studio Gangsters, The Lesser Pauls!

Japanese punk rock band うずひ (Uzuhi) came to town! It was very exciting, and as soon as M and I walked in with our awesome bandanas that displayed the kanji ichiban (meaning #1 in Japanese) around a red rising sun, the band came up to us and we exchanged a hey-you're-awesome moment!
Their music is hyper punk rock that is juxtaposed with melodic Japanese instrument keyboard effects. Even the singing styles of the lead singer and the keyboard girl are so completely opposite, that the way they mesh it all together just makes you want to happily bounce around, really hard.
My attempts to congregate my Japanese classmates at the show failed; but a classmate did say that their self titled music video Uzuhi is like Japan on crack! Of course.. that's all the Japanese music I've encountered so far! The drummer is THE CUTEST JAPANESE MAN I HAVE SEEN IN MY LIFE!

This is the awesome photo we had taken with Uzuhi! We're the ones with bandanas!
The drummer is the one with the bunny on his shirt!

The Studio Gangsters were hilarious. At first I was like.. who are those douchebags in tracksuits? Then when they got on stage I had a moment of understanding. They were very hilarious with tracks like "Who's your Daddy" and "I stole your remote control". There was this one guy who's position was to basically stand on stage, nod his head and be awesome. He was wearing a blue suit with a half buttoned shirt, thick rimmed glasses, and had a gun belt buckle. You can actually see him bobbing his head and grabbing his belt-buckle in the video below!

I enjoyed The Lesser Pauls, they had a style slightly similar to The Yeah Yeah Yeah's.

Matt Allivato and Tyler Nail at Arts Festival

In the small and growing suburb of King, an exciting community event happened. For the first time ever there was an Arts Festival (that I know of at least) hosted by the Foothills coffeeshop. Several artists displayed their art and their musical talents, one of which was my friend and fellow graduating class comrade Matt.
I love seeing Matt play, because he always plays with such emotion that you are transfixed by it and are submerged into his music and lyrics that you forget everything else. His lyrics totally give him away as a romantic, and even make me believe in love.
Matt has a beautiful voice! And he's awesome.

This next song may be something most of you may recognize... "It's Business Time" by Flight of The Conchords. A crowd favorite for sure.

They Might Be Giants

It was a very exciting time when I heard that Johnathan Coulton and They Might Be Giants were in town! In the attempt to make a fashionably late entrance (caused by repetitive shot-taking and the lacking ability to find a parking space on time) we missed Johnathan Coulton. Finally, a parking space later, I reasoned that if they were going to search my bag when I walked in that I am not letting them tell me I can't take in my flask. So I stuck it in my bra and walked in like I couldn't feel the icy cold feel of steel on my boobs. Once inside, M. and I were joined by our friend and waited about half an hour for the show to start, killing the flask, and drinking beers until the show began. As you can see, it was a crazy time, with a lot of confetti cannons going off and the sexy sounds of trumpet.

HOFFA Bellydance

My friend and bellydancer Niisa got to show off her bellydance skills at a HOFFA event/show this past weekend! The show was great, featuring the bellydancers in co-dances or solos. It was a rather laid back night, as there were snacks and plenty of wine which my boyfriend promptly filled my cup with as it depleated. Needless to say, we all ended up a bit tipsy (ok, I was pretty drunk - on the way home I was yelling 'safety precautions' from the car at the poor people walking around uptown).

The highlight of the night was the Pirate Dance! Watch the epicness... the quest... the MUTINY! Why is the rum gone?!

The Jill Dineen Band

The other night I got called out to a free show at the Evening Muse, and after spending about an hour wandering around lost in uptown on my way to a different event I did not object to going there!
This woman and her band played some super awesome blues, and in all.. it was a great evening.

The video includes two songs... the second which was a great crowd pleaser
