Jessie J is my new brit hero (besides Lily Allen.) Her song “Do It Like a Dude” could quite possibly be the best lesbian anthem ever and it was just released as her first international single November 21st! I've been listening to it on loop all day, until my hard drive fried. Incidents not connected, really. I found this video in the YouTube suggestion list.
Besides the major penis envy theme, she just has this air of badass that emanates from her attitude.
I have not found any official sources saying if she's actually a lesbian or not, but you don't have to be a lesbian or a feminist in order to have the occasional penis envy.
I am here to say, I have often suffered from penis envy. A lot of my youth was spent obsessing about androgynous Japanese stars, and playing dress-up. Ok, I still do that, but some things are hard to grow out of. I would often watch male celebrities who can get away by moving/looking/dancing/etc awkwardly and crazily and still maintain an aura of masculinity. I often feel that as a girl, trying to some of those things doesn't really have the same effect.
That's why when I encounter song like this, the lyrics give me a glimmer of hope. Because it makes me feel that I, too, can “ Do it like a dude / Grab my crotch, wear my hat low like you.”
